Admission Requirements

All Students

The final decision regarding admission to the Medical Physics graduate program is made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR), based on recommendations from the Medical Physics Program Chair. All applicants must have a University of Alberta baccalaureate degree or its academic equivalent from another recognized academic institution. The most appropriate path towards a MSc graduate degree in medical physics is a BSc degree in Physics or Engineering Physics. For the PhD program, the most appropriate background is a MSc degree in medical physics. Students with less preparation may be considered, but if admitted, may have to take additional courses.

Canadian Students

• For admission of students from Canadian institutions, Medical Physics requires a minimum grade point average (Usually based on the last two years of study) of 3.3 on a 4 point scale or a letter grade of B+. This is higher than the FGSR's minimum of 3 on a 4 point scale or a letter grade of B.

International Students

• A GRE Physics subject test score is required with a minimum score of 850.
• The same minimum academic achievement requirements apply to international students. The Medical Physics graduate program will only accept students with a minimum grade point average of 3.3 out of 4 or a letter grade of B+ or higher. This must be achieved in the last 2 year of study.
• In addition, international students must demonstrate English language proficiency. English is the primary language of instruction at the U of A. If your earlier education was at a foreign academic institution, and that school is not recognized by the University of Alberta as having English language instruction, you will require proof of English language proficiency. Please submit the results of an official TOEFL, MELAB, IELTS CAEL or Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) examination. The minimum required score in one of the above approved English language examinations is shown below. These results must be less than two years old.
